5 ways to stay anonymous if you win the lottery

Anon Woman

With its jackpot starting at €15 million, hitting the EuroMillions top prize is a big deal. Almost all lottery winners find it difficult to keep the good news to themselves, though. Unfortunately, this attracts some unwanted publicity that throws a shadow on the cloudless days they are living as new lottery millionaires.

If you want to stay anonymous after you become the next EuroMillions jackpot winner, read on for the 5 best ways to do it:

1. Don’t spread the word

I know it sounds ridiculous but how do you think you can keep the news to yourself when you can’t keep your mouth shut? I hate to break it to you, but there’s no way you can stay anonymous AND tell your great aunt Susie from across the country (yes, the one you last saw at your cousin’s wedding a few years ago) that you’re filthy with money so she can come visit.

2. Move house

One of the easiest ways to hide the fact that you are now a lottery winner from the world (or from the neighborhood at least) is to move to another town or city. This way you can comfortably spend a small fortune on a bigger home and a fancier car without all the neighbors finding out where your money has come from.

3. Erase your Internet prescence

OK, erase all your traces. Facebook. Twitter. Pinterest. Email addresses. Phone numbers. Everything. If you want to make sure people will have a really hard time finding you, create fake profiles and erase all your personal information prior to claiming your ticket. This will be your insurance in case there is an information leak and you do become 1st page news.

4. Resist the temptation to give money away

Whether it is a close friend who is in need, a family member who could use a one with a few zeros following it or a charity cause you want to support, you have to resist the temptation to give money away if you want to remain away from the spotlights. If you want to help a close person, you can always come up with a lie and for charities, you have the option to donate smaller amounts on regular intervals of time instead of donating a one-time lump sum!

5. Wait for at least a year before you make any big purchases

You may have found a way to successfully claim your prize anonymously. You may have managed to prevent information leaks from family members and closest friends. Still, there are these millions burning a hole in your pocket and teasing you to shop till you drop. Don’t do it!

What’s the point in all the efforts you put into keeping the news safe when a reckless ridiculously expensive purchase can break your cover and ruin everything? The experts say that you should wait for at least a year for people to forget about the news altogether. But, even then, don’t go on shopping sprees or you risk your anonymity to disappear in thin air (together with your lottery winnings).
