The Most Eccentric Millionaires and Billionaires
You may think that once you become rich, all your problems will disappear and you'll live your regular live happily and stress-free (probably lying on the beach with a cocktail in your hand).
While being rich does have its advantages, it also has its drawbacks. One of the downsides is that having a lot of money will inevitably change you (one way or another). Here's a list of some of the most eccentric millionaires and billionaires and the way their wealth changed them:
We're not sure if there's an appropriate time to become rich, but Mark Zuckerberg's success may have come too soon. Was he even allowed to drink when he became a billionaire? While his strange way of dressing is something we can file under "fairly normal for a young billionaire", his announcement from 2011 that he would not eat meat unless it's been killed with his own two hands is something we're not even sure where to file under.
Ms. Wildenstein is a true example of the consequences of being rich and the damage that can come from an unlimited budget. Before she married billionaire Alec Wildenstein, she was just a stunningly beautiful Swiss socialite. But when the money poured in it changed everything and not for the better. To escape the ravages of time Jocelyn started down the road of plastic surgery and didn't stop until she had managed to change every inch of her face. The result was horrifying, but what's done cannot be undone. Her worst nightmare may have come true when she found out that love is not blind and her husband had been cheating on her. However after she divorced him and got an unbelievable $2.5 billion settlement with a sweet allowance of $100 million a year for 13 years!
Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart (18th Duchess of Alba)
Another victim of plastic surgery, the 18th Duchess of Alba, is the living proof that love conquers all and doesn't have a price tag (if it did however, it would be $5 billion - her approximate wealth). When she fell in love with the over 20 years younger Alfonso Diez Carabantes, her family didn't approve of their relationship as they were afraid that the Duchess was being hoodwinked. To prove them wrong, the Duchess gave her six children their inheritance early and completely renounced her fortune, making Carabantes prove he wasn't in it for the money. Surprisingly perhaps, he stayed faithful to Cayetana until her death in 2014.
Howard Hughes is often remembered as the gold standard for eccentric tycoons of the 20th century. He was living his wildest dreams until he suffered a terrible accident, crashing his experimental plane. After the accident, he spent months in a darkened room without using the bathroom or the toilet, living on just chocolate, chicken, and milk. Gripped by madness he hid from the world in various hotel rooms, often purchasing the properties as his requirements got stranger and stranger, until it became totally impossible to be fulfilled by the owners. He became a victim of an obsessive compulsive disorder, germophobia and developed a severe addiction to painkillers. After his death, his body was so shriveled and unkempt that authorities needed to take his fingerprints in order to prove his identity.
