Inspiring Rags To Riches Stories

13.08.2015

From Rags To Riches

There are people who are born rich and there are people who got to the top the hard way. Some are simply born into a life of luxury and privilege, such as the Royal Family or members of business dynasties, who have known nothing but luxury from the cradle. But there are some people who hadn’t had the luck to be born into such privilege. These are people who have started climbing on the ladder of success from the bottom step. Some of them weren’t even close to getting on the ladder in the first place.

Here are the amazing stories of celebrities and other rich individuals who started life badly but clawed their way to the top.

Ingvar Kamprad (IKEA)

Born on a small farm in Sweden, Ingvar Kamprad started climbing the ladder of success with two empty hands. Raised in a very poor family, the young boy actively participated in the everyday farm life and helped his parents from a rather early age. Reportedly, he was just 6 years old when he was given the task to sell matches in order to help support his family. Analysts say that it is this early entrance into business (be it on such a small scale) that sowed the seeds of entrepreneurship in him that would turn him to one of the richest people on earth with a net worth of more than £2 billion.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is a proud owner of about £2 billion today, but things were quite different when she was younger. Born in an extremely poor family, she spent the first few years of her childhood on her grandmother’s farm while her teenage mother was constantly looking for work. At the early age of 6, she had to live in a boarding house with her mother and had to endure both physical and sexual abuse. When she was 14, however, she managed to escape from her proverbial prison. This was her first step on the path to the success she enjoys today.

Howard Schultz (Starbucks)

With a net worth of more than £1 billion today, Howard Schultz, the CEO and chairman of Starbucks, had a difficult start in life. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he had an uneasy childhood. Both his parents worked long hours and found it difficult to cope with their financial issues, but the young Howard was a very good sportsman and with an athletic scholarship to Northern Michigan University he was given the chance to escape poverty. The first member of his family to attend college, he proved that motivation and studying do pay off eventually.

Ralph Lauren

As young kid from the Bronx, Ralph Lauren had no concept of the glamorous life that lay ahead of him. His family consisted of working-class Jewish immigrants with little money to splash. Young Ralph eventually dropped out of college though this proved to be the first step on his road to success. Having found a job as a glove salesman in order to support himself it's fair to say he entered the world of fashion at the bottom before eventually rising to the very top.
