They say every dog has his day and that's certainly the case for Ruby, the lovable Labrador who helped an Isle of Wight couple win a £300,000 double win playing EuroMillions.
Jane and Slater have been living on the Isle of Wight for 36 years, the last twenty of which they've been avid lottery players. Their dedication was rewarded on September 30th with a £149,089.30 win. Then, just four days later, they the same amount again.
Strange though it may sound they're not the first couple to have won twice on EuroMillions, indeed they're not even the first to have done so this year – cast your mind back the story of David and Kathleen Long who also won EuroMillions twice. In their case the date of their second victory was notable – April 1st!
What's notable in the case of the Slaters, however, is how they won – with a little help from their furry best friend.
"I accused Alan of creating an elaborate joke with the TV", Jane told the press about their first win, "but one look at his face was enough for me to realise he was telling the truth. We didn't know what to do so we both wandered about the house in shock."
Days later, on Ruby's second birthday, they took their dogs Ruby and Kai for a walk in the nearby forest. Still reeling with shock they discussed the win, and what it could mean for their future.
"As we got back in the car to head home Ruby hopped onto the back seat with me and disturbed this piece of paper inside a catalogue which gently floated down to my feet", Jane told the press.
"I really can't explain the way this piece of paper floated, it was like you see in slow motion in films, as though someone wanted me to notice it. I immediately reached down and picked up the slip of paper which turned out to be a lottery ticket."
Initially Jane thought it was the same winning ticket, but soon it became apparent that they actually had not one, but two winning tickets.
"We both burst into tears when we saw that the second ticket was also a winner", said Alan, "It was actually a bit scary because it all happened in such a magical way, what with Ruby disturbing the ticket on her birthday and it floating so gently right in front of Jane’s eyes. The ticket could so easily have disappeared in the rubbish when I tidied up the car, we couldn't help feel that someone was looking down on us."
Divine intervention? Or maybe it was just their furry friend looking out for them.
The couple, who are on the eve of their 43rd wedding anniversary, now have much to look forward to in the autumn of their years. Alan is set to retire shortly and Jane hints that she's now looking forward to doing likewise. They also plan on having a big party to celebrate and making sure their family are well taken care of thereafter.
As for Ruby and Kai, Jane hints that there will be plenty of treats in store for them also. They certainly deserve them.
